The beauty of sustainable transport

One of the delights of sustainable transport is its capacity to kill many birds with one stone – not that thats what you’d be wanting to do in Barwon Heads at all.

But if you think about it if you walk, you multi-task. Take the children to the playground and you can also get some exercise, catch up with your friends on the way, smile and reduce stress, pat the neighbours dog, help the little old lady over the road and get the milk for the morning if you go the long way home.

In the meantime you’ve saved the governments health budget and your tax  – saved them from treating you from one of the many lifestyle diseases as well as from dementia in later life – and made your community happier, safer and a more socially inclusive place. You’ve also decreased greenhouse gas, and other pollutant loads which would have occurred if you drove to the shop and back, and as saved a tiny piece of Barwon Heads from sea-level rising earlier than appears inevitable. Oh, and you’ve saved a local small business in town. All in one small walk.

And thats exactly what the evidence says…

What can you save on the planet by walking in Barwon Heads? How would you measure it?
